Fall Planting
Fall is the time to plant trees, shrubs, and vines that eventually become the backbone of your landscape and last for years to come. The soil is still warm to stimulate root development, and winter rains help them get established so they can wake up and grow when spring arrives. Check with a Miner’s Garden Center staff member to make sure you are choosing plants for the correct sun or shade exposure, and take into consideration their eventual size and water requirements.
Bulbs Are In!
Now is the time to purchase your bulbs for a beautiful spring bloom. Buy early so you have more varieties to choose from.
Planting California Native Grasses
We have a California native grass seed mix from Stover Seed Company in 1lb packaging selling for $16.99. It contains a mixture of native California grasses that is easy to grow and exhibits a fine texture. The grasses in this mix include the official state grass of California, Purple Needlegrass (Nasella pulchra). If left unmowed the grasses develop into a mature stand with beautiful seed heads, some in purple colors. When mowed, the grasses produce a fine bladed turf that is resistant to moderate traffic. The native grasses in this mixture are the same as those used in the native meadow lawn at the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden.

Spruce Up Your Garden With Fresh Color!
If your flower garden is starting to look ratty, dig it up, add some amendments and replant with fresh cool-season annuals and perennials. Some good choices in six-packs now are, stock, snapdragon, alyssum, Iceland poppy, sweet William, calendula, candytuft, primrose, foxglove, and pansy. Some great perennials include cyclamen, nemesia, bidens, mums, and sweet violas. (Just to name a few.) Sweet peas and wildflowers are a good choice to plant from seeds now.
Fall Care for Geraniums
Cut back Zonal and Ivy Geraniums by about half. Cutting now will encourage regrowth during winter and give the plants a rest from flowering. Make your cuts ½” above a leaf joint and leave a couple of leaves on each branch that are healthy. Bare stubs will not recover. Clean out all debris and feed them occasionally during the winter with an all purpose organic fertilizer. Dig out some of the old soil in potted specimens and replace it with fresh soil mixed with one tablespoon lime per gallon. As the plants grow, pinch back tips to make them bushy.
Control Crabgrass
Control crabgrass now by pulling it up by the roots. It is easy to recognize because it grows low and crablike, spreading out into a thick clump. Roughen up and reseed bare spots left by crabgrass. Cover the seeds with compost or manure, water deeply and keep moist.
Got Veggies?
Start shopping for your winter vegetables! First, pull up and compost the remains of your summer garden. Dig up the soil and turn it over to aerate and break up clods as you go. Then mix in Gardner & Bloom soil building compost and a good organic fertilizer like Foxfarm or Dr. Earth to maximize your harvest. Be sure to plant tall crops to the north and short crops to the south, and provide them with full sun.
Here are some cool-season crops; arugula, broad beans, beets, broccoli, broccoli raab,
Brussels sprouts, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, cauliflower, collards, endive, Florence fennel, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, parsley, parsnip, peas, radicchio, radish, red mustard, spinach and turnips.
