Living Xmas Trees
Our living Xmas trees have arrived and just in time for you to pick out the best ones. We have Blue Spruces, Dwarf Alberta Spruces, a variety of Pines, and sheared Redwoods. Miner’s recommends spraying your live tree with an anti-transpirant like Cloud Cover or Wilt Stop from Bonide before bringing it inside to protect it from losing too much moisture in your home. These trees are accustomed to cool nights when they can slow down their processes and ‘sleep’ (just like us!). We keep our homes much warmer in the winter, and this causes the trees processes to work around the clock, causing the trees to lose more water than they can uptake, no matter how much water you give them. Anti-transpirants slow the evaporation of water from the trees leaves and allow them to survive indoors longer without permanent damage so they can be planted in your landscape after the holidays.
Everything is coming up roses! Bare Root Roses are in this month...
December through January is an important time for rose care because this is when you should spend time on your roses to insure a beautiful display in the spring and throughout the summer.
First choose new varieties of bare-root roses from the huge selection offered at Miner’s Garden Center Nursery. Bare-root roses from Jackson Perkins will be arriving the first week of December! These roses are grown in fields and dug up in their dormant season so their roots can be washed of soil and pruned for shipment to nurseries all over the United States. That is why they are called bare-root, because the roots are essentially bare. At this stage it is very important that the roots do not dry out. Here at Miners we also buy them in boxed paper pots with soil in them so the roots never dry out and they are ready to plant, pot and all! Each rose comes with an information label complete with planting instructions and they also make a perfect gift for that special person on your list. Include a good rose fertilizer to complete your gift! We recommend Fox Farm Rose Fertilizer.
Highlight on one of our local growers - Native Sons
Native Sons is a wholesale nursery firmly rooted in the heart of California’s Mediterranean climatic core. We work to provide perennials, grasses and shrubs that flourish in a climate defined by moderate winter rainfall and warm dry summers. The cyclical shortage of water here asks its gardeners to plant with a sense of responsibility, an open mind, and an air of adventure. The plants we grow are selected in an effort to reinforce this philosophy.
We draw from our native California flora as well as from the other Mediterranean floras of the world; Australia, South Africa, Chile and the Mediterranean Basin. It is our hope that by offering these plants we might foster a heightened awareness of our climate and the ecological realities inherent in such an environment.
Native Sons began in 1979 on one acre with the idea of producing the finest California native plants for landscape and retail nurseries. Over the years Native Sons has grown in size and scope to include plants from other Mediterranean regions of the world (Mediterranean Europe, Southwestern Australia, South Africa and Chile) as well as California natives.
In 1985 the focus of Native Sons shifted from producing landscape material to producing a wider variety of plants in smaller container sizes for the rapidly expanding retail nursery trade. Today we service over 100 retail nurseries, several wholesalers, and landscape professionals. Native Sons plant material can be found in gardens from San Diego to Portland, Oregon.
Our original staff of 3 has grown to more than 20 full-time employees, and the nursery itself has grown from its one-acre beginning to more than eight acres of greenhouses and field production. In the future Native Sons hopes to expand its market and continue providing satisfying jobs for its crew of talented employees. |
