Buy Your Bulbs Now

All of our Beautiful spring and summer blooming bulbs are in!! Make sure you come in and check out the huge selection in all of our Garden Centers. The weather is nice and the soil is moist and perfect for planting bulbs.

Here are some tips for planting your bulbs:

  1. Choose bulbs that are suited to the locations you are planting. Take into consideration sun exposure and water requirements.
  2. Layer your plantings with taller varieties in back, medium height in center and low bloomers in front. If you only want one variety, consider choosing another contrasting color to go with it that will really set off your original choice.
  3. Buy a good bulb fertilizer and/or bulb planting mix.to place in the hole when you plant, not to top dress.

Got Snails?

Start controlling those snails and slugs! Warm rains keep snails and slugs on the prowl. Our common garden snail is the edible European snail Helix aspersa, an important food source since ancient times. You may have eaten them in a restaurant as escargot, but when they are eating your plants and leaving snail trails all over the place...Yuk! Here are some great controls.

  • Clean up the garden; get rid of undergrowth and other hiding places.
  • Lay cabbage leaves in your growing beds, slugs will visit them at night and hide under them by day, that is when you gather them up and toss them, slugs and all.
  • Surround trunks of citrus trees with copper collars. Snails won’t cross them. Trim low-hanging branches that brush the ground.
  • Go out at night with a flashlight and rubber gloves and hand pick them; bag them, and dispose in trash.
  • Use baits. They come in spray, pellet and granular forms. Most are metaldehyde, some contain carbaryl as well and control earwigs, sowbugs, ants and cutworms too. They are Cooke’s and Buggeta Plus. Both are highly effective but also toxic and cannot be used around edibles. Sluggo is a non-toxic made with iron phosphate, which is ok to use around edibles and safe for pets. When using baits, bait once thoroughly, wait ten days, and bait again. The first time is for parent snails and the second gets theoffspring.

Pruning Hydrangeas

Now is the perfect time to prune back your Hydrangeas if you haven’t already. They are probably looking a bit thin and the blooms are very small if any. Here is a good illustration on how to prune properly. You may fertilize now if you live in a coastal area, but wait another month or two if you live inland or in North County. All of our stores carry the hydrangea bluing fertilizer that keeps the soil pH at the right level for regular pink hydrangea to turn blue, and any acid lover bloom formula will work with that to insure beautiful blooms.

Olive Tree Care

Watch for peacock spot on olive trees during these winter months. It appears as a black spot on the leaves with a slight yellow halo around the spot. Miner’s recommends using LIQUI-COP copper spray from Monterey as a preventative or to stop the spread once it appears. (Always refer to the product label on container for specific use.)
