Planting Perennials

Now is the time to plant summer perennials. We have a huge selection in six packs, 5 inch as well as 4-inch containers. These include; Shasta daisies, gaillardia, yarrow, salvia, Santa Barbara daisies, blue fescue, coral bells, candy tuft, carnations, foxglove, delphinium and larkspur, to name a few. Please be sure to fertilize and amend the soil when you plant to ensure your young plants a good start. We carry a great variety of fertilizers and soil amendments for every type of plant including Fox Farm Organics and Kellogg Soil Building Compost.

Tomatoes & Vegetables

We have a large selection of heirloom and hybrid tomatoes this year. Watch for our 1 gallon Ace tomatoes coming April 15th for the sale price of $3.49! It is safe to plant inland now as well, so come now while we have so many in stock. You can still plant summer vegetables and we have them in 4-inch pots, 4-packs and 6-packs. Some examples are; zucchini squash, crookneck squash, beets, onions, cucumbers, lemon cucumbers, snow peas, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers and much, much more!

Plant Wisteria

Wisteria needs to be planted in full sun with a strong support system. Water and fertilize often for a year or two or until well established, and then enjoy it’s drought resistance. The blooms of the wisteria are among the most romantic of flowers in color, shape and fragrance. Come in and see our selection before they are all sold out.

Choose Hydrangea

We have a fabulous selection of hydrangeas in spring. Come in early for the largest variety. Hydrangeas need to be planted in the ground with an acidic soil mix (Kellogg’s Azalea Planting Mix), or mix one part your native soil with 2 parts premoistened peat moss. Mulch with redwood bark and maintain the proper pH with aluminum sulfate or a pH adjuster. This should be done at least three times a year. These products are all available at Miner’s; just ask one of our sales staff for assistance.

Trim, prune mow & divide

  • Trim hedges and screens including Pittosporum sp., Myoporum sp., and Photinia sp.
  • Thin out fruit on deciduous fruit trees.
  • Prune roses by picking, deadheading, and disbudding.
  • Mow lawns.
  • Thin vegetable planted last month according to directions (including beans).
  • Stop pinching fuchsias when plants are filled out and bushy, but remove seedpods often after flowers fall
  • Pinch back petunias when you plant them.

Fertilize

  • Feed citrus & avocado trees with a good fertilize specific to them.
  • Feed fuchsias, tuberous begonias, irises and roses with a good bloom formula.
  • Feed and water cycads
  • Treat blue hydrangeas with aluminum sulfate.
  • Fertilize peppers when blooms first show with an organic veggie fertilizer.
